Built in just three months, the Day House exudes the can-do spirit of the “Greatest Generation”. A continuous wall of glass frames dramatic views of Magnuson Park, Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, and Lake Washington while nearly erasing the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. Designed by northwest architectural luminary Wendell Lovett, in close collaboration with its original owners, Emmett and Roxie Day, the home radiates ingenuity, boldness, and a sense of purpose. A massive fireplace soars to the vaulted wood ceilings, providing an anchor point around which the post and beam main floor spaces are arranged. Mr. Day, a mechanical engineer, incorporated cutting edge technologies into his 1958 home, including low voltage electrical wiring and a hydronic radiator heating system. The lower level includes a large wood and metal shop, which was well utilized by Mr. Day who could make by hand just about anything that struck his fancy, including the home’s interior staircase and the large table with extension leaves that sits in the dining room today. The main floor plan includes a small sewing room, which was a must have for Mrs. Day, who famously sewed all of her own clothes.
This home is a key vestige of the Pacific Northwest’s architectural heritage and will no doubt be loved for generations to come.
